Road tax and insurance are two things every Malaysian motorcycle owner must renew annually. Riding without either is illegal and leaves you completely unprotected financially. Here's a clear breakdown of both — what they are, what they cost, and how to renew them.

Part 1: Motorcycle Road Tax (Cukai Jalan)

Road tax, officially known as **Lesen Kenderaan Motor (LKM)**, is a mandatory annual fee under the Road Transport Act 1987. The money goes into Malaysia's Consolidated Fund for road infrastructure.

**Road tax rates are set by JPJ** and are based purely on engine capacity (cc). For motorcycles in Peninsular Malaysia, the current rates are:

| Engine Capacity | Annual Road Tax |

| Up to 150cc | RM2.00 |

| 151cc – 200cc | RM30.00 |

| 201cc – 250cc | RM50.00 |

| 251cc – 500cc | RM80.00 |

| 501cc – 800cc | RM150.00 |

| Above 800cc | RM200.00 |

> Rates in Sabah and Sarawak are lower. The rates above apply to Peninsular Malaysia. Rates have not changed since 2009. Always verify with JPJ or MyEG for the most current figures.

**Important:** You must have a valid insurance policy in place before you can renew your road tax. The two are renewed together — you cannot get one without the other.

How to renew road tax:

• **MyJPJ app** — fastest, fully digital

• **MyEG** (myeg.com.my)

• **Pos Malaysia** counters

• **JPJ branches** and kiosks

Since February 10, 2023, physical road tax stickers no longer need to be displayed on the vehicle. The digital record in MyJPJ is the valid proof.

Part 2: Motorcycle Insurance / Takaful

Motorcycle insurance (or Takaful for Shariah-compliant coverage) is legally required in Malaysia. Riding without valid insurance is a serious offence.

There are three types of coverage available:

1. Third Party Only

The minimum legal requirement. Covers injury, death, or property damage you cause to others. Does NOT cover damage to your own motorcycle.

This is the cheapest option, suitable for old or low-value motorcycles where the cost of repairing your own bike wouldn't justify the premium.

2. Third Party, Fire and Theft

Covers third-party liability (as above) plus fire damage and theft of your motorcycle. Does not cover accident damage to your own bike.

3. Comprehensive

The most complete coverage — covers damage to your own motorcycle (from accident, fire, or theft) plus third-party liability. Recommended for bikes with significant market value.

No-Claim Discount (NCD)

Malaysian motorcycle insurance includes an NCD system. If you make no claims during a policy year, you earn a discount on the next year's premium:

• After 1 claim-free year: 25% discount

• After 2 years: 30%

• After 3 years: 38.33%

• After 4 years: 45%

• After 5+ years: 55%

This discount follows you, not the bike. If you sell your bike and buy a new one, transfer your NCD to the new policy.

Optional Add-Ons Worth Considering

• **Special Perils** — covers flood, storm, landslide. Highly recommended in Malaysia given frequent flash floods

• **Legal Liability to Pillion** — covers your pillion passenger's injury claims against you

• **Personal Accident cover** — pays out in the event of death or permanent disability of the rider

What Happens If You Ride Without Insurance or Road Tax?

• Riding without valid insurance: compound fine or court prosecution

• Riding without road tax: compound fine of RM150–RM300 or court fine up to RM3,000 under the Road Transport Act 1987

• In an accident without insurance: you are personally liable for all damages, medical costs, and compensation to the other party — which can run into tens of thousands of ringgit

Renew both annually. It takes under 10 minutes online and is one of the cheapest things you can do to protect yourself.
