Malaysian Motorcycle Licence Guide — B2, B1, and B Full Explained

Before you buy a motorcycle in Malaysia, you need to understand the licence classes. Riding the wrong cc bike for your licence class is a traffic offence — and it will void your insurance claim in an accident. Here's what you need to know.

The Three Motorcycle Licence Classes

Malaysia's motorcycle licences are structured by engine capacity under the Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ):

Getting a B2 Licence (New Applicants)

The B2 licence is the standard entry point for new Malaysian motorcycle riders.

Eligibility:

• Malaysian citizen with valid MyKad

• Minimum age: 16 years old

Process:

1. Enrol at an accredited driving institute (Institut Memandu Bertauliah)

2. Sit and pass the Highway Code theory test (Ujian Undang-Undang)

3. Complete practical riding training on the circuit

4. Pass the JPJ practical test

5. Obtain the Probationary Driving Licence (PDL / Lesen P) — valid for 2 years

6. After probation, the licence is converted to a full Competent Driving Licence (CDL)

The B2 PDL holders must display a "P" sticker on their motorcycle. Riding without it during probation is an offence.

Upgrading from B2 to B Full Licence

Since October 1, 2024, B2 and B1 holders can apply to upgrade to the B Full licence through JPJ's **Special Transition Programme**, without having to sit the full JPJ practical test again.

Requirements to apply:

• Malaysian citizen

• Valid B2 or B1 CDL (not PDL/P licence)

• Must have held B2/B1 licence for at least 10 years

• No blacklisted summonses, outstanding offences, or restrictions under the Road Transport Act 1987

Process:

1. Check eligibility via the **MyJPJ app**, the mySIKAP portal (public.jpj.gov.my), or at any JPJ counter

2. Register at one of the 180+ participating driving institutes across Malaysia

3. Attend and pass a 2-hour practical adaptation course for high-capacity motorcycles (500cc and above)

4. A Qualified Training Officer (QTO) assesses your competency

5. Pay the programme fee of **RM160** (inclusive of registration, insurance, course, and JPJ test fee)

If you fail the assessment, you may retake it on a separate day (same RM160 fee applies per attempt).

What Happens If You Ride the Wrong Bike for Your Licence?

Riding a motorcycle above your licensed capacity is an offence under the Road Transport Act 1987. The consequences include:

• Traffic summons

• Licence demerit points

• In the event of an accident, your **insurance policy may be voided** — this is one of the most serious practical consequences
