It's one of the first decisions any motorcycle buyer faces — and there's no universal right answer. New and used bikes each make sense in different situations. Here is how to think through it clearly.
---
You know exactly what you are getting.
No hidden accident history, no mystery service records, no worn parts. A new motorcycle comes with a manufacturer warranty (commonly 1-2 years for many brands in Malaysia, depending on manufacturer terms), and everything is at zero — zero wear, zero mileage, zero unknowns.
Financing is easier.
Banks and financial institutions are more willing to offer favorable hire purchase terms on new motorcycles. Interest rates may be more competitive, and the process is straightforward through authorised dealers.
Promotional packages.
Dealers often bundle free accessories, extended warranty, or first-year servicing into new bike packages — especially during festive seasons. These add real value.
Cons of buying new:
• Depreciation starts immediately. A new motorcycle can lose meaningful value once registered and ridden, with the exact drop depending on model demand, mileage, and condition.
• Higher upfront cost.
• Less negotiating room — on-road prices at authorised dealers are fairly fixed.
---
Lower entry price.
The biggest advantage. A 2-3 year old motorcycle in good condition often costs significantly less than new, while still offering a very similar riding experience.
Slower depreciation.
A used bike has already absorbed the steepest part of its depreciation curve. You lose less value over your ownership period.
More negotiating room.
Private sellers are generally more flexible on price than dealerships, especially if they are motivated to sell.
Cons of buying used:
• Unknown history. Even with a clean-looking bike, you cannot always verify how it was maintained or if it was in an accident.
• No manufacturer warranty (unless the bike is very new and warranty is transferable — check with the dealer).
• Potentially higher short-term maintenance costs if parts are due for replacement.

| Your Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| First bike, limited budget | Used — less financial risk while learning |
| Stable income, want peace of mind | New — known condition, warranty covered |
| Buying for investment/resale | Used — better value retention |
| Specific model that sells out fast | New — secure availability |
| Buying a second or third bike | Used — experience means you can vet it properly |
---
Some authorised dealers offer certified pre-owned or demonstrator units — motorcycles with low mileage, inspected and sometimes carrying remaining manufacturer warranty. This is often the best of both worlds: lower price than new, better assurance than a private used purchase.
Ask at Honda, Yamaha, and Modenas authorised dealers about demo or certified used availability.
