How to Spot an Overpriced Motorcycle Listing in Malaysia

By MotoPlace Editorial

🏍️

An overpriced listing is not always dishonest — sometimes sellers genuinely do not know the market. But as a buyer, your job is to know the difference between fair value and wishful thinking. Here is how.

---

Step 1: Know the New Price First

Before evaluating any used listing, look up the current new price of the same model from an authorised dealer. No used motorcycle should be priced above new — unless it is a rare, discontinued, or heavily modified unit with enthusiast demand.

---

Step 2: Apply Realistic Market Depreciation

A rough guide for Peninsular Malaysia:

1 year old: 75–85% of new price

2–3 years: 60–75%

4–5 years: 45–60%

6+ years: 35–50% or lower

If a 4-year-old bike is listed at 85% of new price with no extraordinary reason, it is overpriced.

---

Step 3: Compare Against Active Listings

Search MotoPlace.my for the same model, similar year and mileage. If multiple similar bikes are listed at RM6,000–RM6,500 and the one you are looking at is RM7,800, you need a strong reason — excellent condition, very low mileage, or included accessories — to justify the gap.

---

Common Overpricing Justifications (That Do not Hold Up)

"I spent RM2,000 on accessories."

Accessories — exhaust, box, lights — rarely add market value dollar for dollar. They add appeal to some buyers, but the next buyer may not want them. Factor at most 30–50% of accessory cost into value.

"It's a limited color / rare variant."

For Malaysian market bikes, color rarely moves the needle significantly. The exceptions are genuinely limited production runs of enthusiast models.

"The engine is fully rebuilt."

A rebuilt engine on an old chassis does not bring the bike back to new value. It removes one concern but the rest of the bike is still aged.

"I've never dropped it."

Unverifiable, and it does not change how hard it was ridden.

What You Should Do

Make a reasonable offer based on condition and market data

If the seller is unwilling to negotiate to a reasonable range, move on — there are always other listings
