Allowing a test ride is a necessary part of selling a motorcycle — most serious buyers will ask for one. But as a seller, you are handing your asset to a stranger. Here is how to do it safely without creating unnecessary risk.
---
Check their licence.
Ask to see the buyer's driving licence before handing over the key. Confirm the licence class is appropriate for your motorcycle's engine size. A buyer without the right licence class riding your bike is technically an illegal rider — if an accident occurs, your insurance situation becomes complicated.
Hold their MyKad.
Standard practice in Malaysia. The buyer leaves their IC with you while they ride. This is not just a deterrent against theft — it is proof of identity if anything goes wrong.
Ask if they are insured.
For private individuals (not dealers), the buyer's own insurance typically does not cover riding someone else's bike unless specifically arranged. Your insurance as the owner may cover the bike during a test ride — but confirm with your insurer, as policies differ.
---
Before handing over the key:
• Agree on a specific route (a short loop, typically 5–10 minutes maximum)
• The route should be within your line of sight where possible — a residential loop is ideal
• State clearly: no highway, no testing maximum speed
A serious buyer who wants to assess the bike's running condition does not need to go far. A buyer pushing to take it on a long test ride is a concern.
---
• Stay present at the meeting point — do not leave
• Note the time the buyer departs
• If the buyer is significantly overdue, call them — have their number before the ride, not after
---
• Check the bike over briefly before accepting the key back
• If any damage occurred during the ride (however minor), address it before the buyer leaves — do not discover it later
• Return the IC promptly
---
If the buyer damages the bike during a test ride, you have their IC and ideally a record of the agreed conditions. A simple handwritten test ride acknowledgment ("I, [name], [IC number], agree to test ride [bike] on [date] and am responsible for any damage during the ride") signed before the ride adds further protection — some sellers use these for high-value units.
If the buyer does not return: you have their IC number, their phone number, and potentially witnesses. File a police report immediately.
